Welcome to the Shire of Coppertree Info Page!

We represent the The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in the Utica, Rome, and Oneida areas.

What is the SCA?

The SCA is an international non-profit organization dedicated to re-creating the best of the Medieval and Renaissance eras (c. 400 - c. 1600.) Members study and enjoy various arts and sciences such as history, culture, music, dance, mock combat, fencing, archery, armoring, heraldry, embroidery, costuming, calligraphy, cooking and brewing - just to name a few.

What is a "Shire?"

For internal purposes, the SCA is organized into geographic entities called "branches" with somewhat fanciful names. SCA branches are often hard to define in terms of "real-world" nations, states, and territories.

In decending order of size, the kinds of branches you are likely to encounter are:

  1. Kingdoms (largest)
  2. Principalities, Regions, and Crown Principalities
  3. Baronies, Provinces, Shires, and Strongholds
  4. Cantons and Ridings (smallest)

As of 1997, the SCA has fourteen kingdoms, covering the entire world. The "Kingdom of Æthelmearc", for example, spans most of New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Who is the SCA?

Outside of a couple corporate offices, the SCA is entirely run by volunteers; wonderful people who contribute their time to make things happen. Most of these people work to earn a living outside the SCA. Please be considerate in your use of their time and energy:

How do I join?

If any of this sounds interesting to you, you are welcome to join our group. The easiest way to go about this is to just show up! For more information, contact any of the people listed above - OR - you can come to our weekly meetings. They are currently every Tuesday evening from 7PM onward at the Armory on ???? St. in Oneida, N.Y. Call or email one of us for directions.

Most of the SCA's activities are open to anyone of legal age (and to minors with parental permission.) Official membership is not required to attend events or meetings so you can observe the SCA and even try out some of its activities without becoming an official member.
